Hello Room 9 Parents,
It is a busy week at BES. Last week we wound up our first reading, writing and math units, and I will share your child’s work with you at conference time. (Please watch for the math assessment data that will be sent home tomorrow.) We have started new nonfiction reading and writing units, and in math the class is learning about place value. Please continue to encourage your child to read and practice math facts regularly. I have been impressed with the reading and math parent communication sheets. Most children are going above and beyond the recommended 10 minutes for reading and 5 minutes for math. All my students are now logged onto the Xtramath program, which is an excellent way to study basic facts on the computer. Tomorrow, I will be sending home the information sheet explaining how to log on at home. Have a great week and please look over the reminders below. Thank you! Laura Lenahan Reminders: Book Fair: Today our class visited the book fair and made wish lists. We will return tomorrow to make purchases at 11:30. The book fair will also be open on Wednesday evening from 6:00-7:30 in conjunction with Mystery Reader Night. This Wednesday (October 17) is an early dismissal day (1:05) Next Wednesday and Thursday are early dismissal days for Parent/Teacher conferences. I have only had one order form returned. I do not need the forms until the 9th, but think it would be easy to forget after the long weekend.
Have a nice evening, Laura lenahan Hello Room 9 Families,
I hope you all survived the torrential rain and do not have flooded basements! I want to give you a few quick reminders and briefly fill you in on what your children are working on in the classroom. Important Dates: 9/28 (This Friday) – Early Dismissal (1:05) 10/8 Columbus Day – No School 10/9 Picture Day 10/24 and 10/25 – Early Dismissal (1:05) for Parent/Teacher Conferences 10/31 – Halloween Parade (2:15) If you have not signed up for a conference time, please email me with a convenient time. If you can’t make it in on the 24th or 25th, I am happy to meet with you another day before or after school. (See the schedule at the bottom of this post.) Below is a brief summary of what we are working on in class: Writing: Students are writing personal narratives about a small moment in their lives. Today in class each student looked though all their small moment narratives and selected one that they would like to publish. It would be very helpful if you asked your child which story they selected and to tell it to you bit by bit. Perhaps even brainstorm ways they could add more description, thoughts, feelings and dialogue to their story. Reading: Students have been building their reading stamina, and I am pleased to say that most students can read for 30 minutes! Keep up that reading at home. We have also been working on comprehension strategies and figuring out tricky words. Math: In math we have been working on basic addition and subtraction facts, with a focus on Make Ten Break Ten, Doubles and Halves, and Use Doubles. (An explanation of these is on the fact fluency sheet sent home on Curriculum Night.) We have also been solving addition and subtraction word problems, and today we started learning about bar graphs.
