Year End Celebration and Math Games

Hi Parents,
I hope you enjoy the long weekend! Your children have certainly earned it. They have been having test after test this week, and have been great sports and worked hard.

We are almost at the end of the year, and I would like to invite you into our class for an end of the year celebration on Thursday, June 6th from 2:30 – 3:25. My plan was to teach you some math games that we have been playing in class, so you too can learn them, and perhaps play them with your child over the summer J I know it is a busy time of year, and I will provide all the refreshments. I am hoping that many of you can make it, but if not I completely understand.

Please thank to all of your friends and relatives for participating so enthusiastically in our Flat Stanley Project. We have learned about so many fascinating places in the United States and the world through Stanley’s travels!

Have a nice weekend,
Laura Lenahan

Hi Room 9 Parents,

My class will be visiting the Book Fair tomorrow from 10:00-10:30. At that time your child may make a wish list of books, or they may purchase books. Please send your child in with money if you would like them to purchase books tomorrow. The Book Fair will also be open on Wednesday evening during the Art Show, if you would like to purchase books at that time.

Hello Room 9 Parents,
Your children did a great job getting back to work after April break. We are in the home stretch now, and it is hard to believe there are only 31 days of school left!

Update Information:
Social Studies/Flat Stanley: We have been flooded with Flat Stanley mail, and your children have been having a wonderful time learning about the United States through his travels.  Thank you for sending out so many letters, and please give a big thank you to your friends and relatives for all the fascinating information and souvenirs they have sent us!

Math: We are finishing up our unit on adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers. I will be giving the test next week. Please continue to encourage your children to study their basic math facts, and don’t forget about Xtra Math! It is my hope that all my students will enter 3rd grade fluent in their addition and subtraction facts. (I noticed a little backslide after the break.)

Reading and Writing: We are currently in nonfiction reading and writing units. In reading, students are working very hard to identify the main idea and supporting details in their books. They are becoming increasingly familiar with text features (table of contents, glossary, headings, charts, diagrams…), and are using them in their own nonfiction writing.

Science: We are about to begin our final science unit, Properties of Matter. Thank you for sending in supplies to be used in the culminating project. We now have plenty of cardboard, but could still use more tape, Styrofoam, foam peanuts, and pipe cleaners. Students will be using these supplies to build a container to keep an ice-pop frozen for as long as possible.

Have a wonderful weekend!

We have just begun a very exciting unit in Social Studies.  The children are learning about map skills and communities and will be “visiting” as many states as possible through this project.  In the book, Flat Stanley, Stanley is so flat that he is able to travel in an envelope across the country in the U.S. mail. Second graders are sending letters along with a picture of Flat Stanley to relatives and friends around the country (and World!), and they have asked that Stanley be mailed back to us with some information about their state.  We have been overwhelmed in the past with people’s generosity and enthusiasm!  Mail time is exciting and anticipated with baited breath as we track Stanley's travels on our classroom map!

Hi Parents,
Happy first day of spring. Today was a fun-filled day for the 2nd graders.  In the morning, there was a cultural arts assembly, and we were joined by the 2nd grade students from Haddam Elementary School. Afterward, the 2nd grade students at Burr had a chance to meet their Haddam pen pals. We did a craft together and then played together on the playground.

I sent home the results of the unit 5 math test today. Please look for it in your child’s backpack. Tomorrow, we will be starting a new unit exploring addition and subtraction within 1,000.

Have a nice evening,
Laura Lenahan

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is next Thursday, and we will be having a little celebration in our classroom at the end of the day (2:45-3:25).  Parents are welcome to come, but please do not feel any pressure to attend if you are busy.
We are in pretty good shape with treats and supplies. I have parents bringing:
  • Plates, cups and napkins
  • Mini cupcakes
  • Chocolate covered strawberries
If there is something you would like to donate, please let me know. I thought it would be nice to do a Valentine craft. If there are any crafty parents out there that would like to organize this, I would really appreciate your help.
Thank you!
Mrs. Lenahan
