Hello Room 9 Parents,
Your children did a great job getting back to work after April break. We are in the home stretch now, and it is hard to believe there are only 31 days of school left!

Update Information:
Social Studies/Flat Stanley: We have been flooded with Flat Stanley mail, and your children have been having a wonderful time learning about the United States through his travels.  Thank you for sending out so many letters, and please give a big thank you to your friends and relatives for all the fascinating information and souvenirs they have sent us!

Math: We are finishing up our unit on adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers. I will be giving the test next week. Please continue to encourage your children to study their basic math facts, and don’t forget about Xtra Math! It is my hope that all my students will enter 3rd grade fluent in their addition and subtraction facts. (I noticed a little backslide after the break.)

Reading and Writing: We are currently in nonfiction reading and writing units. In reading, students are working very hard to identify the main idea and supporting details in their books. They are becoming increasingly familiar with text features (table of contents, glossary, headings, charts, diagrams…), and are using them in their own nonfiction writing.

Science: We are about to begin our final science unit, Properties of Matter. Thank you for sending in supplies to be used in the culminating project. We now have plenty of cardboard, but could still use more tape, Styrofoam, foam peanuts, and pipe cleaners. Students will be using these supplies to build a container to keep an ice-pop frozen for as long as possible.

Have a wonderful weekend!

We have just begun a very exciting unit in Social Studies.  The children are learning about map skills and communities and will be “visiting” as many states as possible through this project.  In the book, Flat Stanley, Stanley is so flat that he is able to travel in an envelope across the country in the U.S. mail. Second graders are sending letters along with a picture of Flat Stanley to relatives and friends around the country (and World!), and they have asked that Stanley be mailed back to us with some information about their state.  We have been overwhelmed in the past with people’s generosity and enthusiasm!  Mail time is exciting and anticipated with baited breath as we track Stanley's travels on our classroom map!
